Colour Ideas for your Garden

Adding colour to your garden (or courtyard if you are an inner city urbanite like me!) can really create a whole new dimension to your outdoor space. Colour often has the power to turn something rather ordinary into something quite extraordinary. The affect this can have on your mood and the overall feel of a space can make a big difference to how you use and enjoy your outdoor area.

This courtyard above has an industrial feel but is softened by the green on the corrugated iiron. The hue of the paint blends with the plants creating a greater sense of “greenery” in what is a small urban space. The pink soft furnishings offer a nice contrast adding interest.

I’m not sure how relaxed you would feel with a red garden wall but it certainly packs a punch and works brilliantly as a dramatic backdrop for the stunning purple flowers and greenery. This image is a great example of just how powerful and striking colour can be - the red has an energy all of its own.

There is quite a lot going on in this garden but it all works together beautifully. The rust effect walls with its vertical succulent garden pairs nicely with the charcoal wooden fence complete with its own climbing greenery.

I just love this courtyard. It isn’t big but it really has that “English cottage garden” feel with all of its beautiful flowers. The clever grouping of plants has the wonderful effect of intensifying the purple colour.

An easy (and relatively cheap way) to add some colour to your outdoor space is to simply add some bright accessories such as these cushions. They really lift the space in this corner seating area.

This is another simple and inexpensive way to add some colour to your garden. These upcycled cans are both practical and add a sense of fun (especially with the white polka dots) to an otherwise plain wire fence.

Ahhhh black. I’m a huge fan of dark walls and especially love to see them outdoors as they really make greenery (and in this case the tangerine butterfly chairs) pop. Bold AND beautiful.

The pic above is a great one to finish this blog on. It shows how something quite ordinary (in this case a simple allotment shed in Oxford) can be transformed into something quite extraordinary - simply through the clever use of colour. The shed picks up all of the colours in its surroundings resulting in the ability to be both eye-catching whilst also blending and working within the landscape.
