Ceilings - Don't forget Your Fifth Wall

Before I became a colourist, I didn’t really think too much about colour options for ceilings. Like most people I just assumed a ceiling would be “white” - right? Well I was pretty wrong on that front and I’ve since learnt that not only can you do a lot with colour on walls but ceilings too. Be it a subtle hint or something really bold and eye-catching, your ceilings are an important part of the interior colour palette - as they say in the design world, it is your “fifth wall”. How your ceiling looks can make a huge difference to the mood and feel of a space.

In this bathroom the top of the walls have also been painted black which has the effect of lowering the ceiling - the edges seem to blur and it is harder to differentiate where the ceiling meets the walls. The contrast of the emerald green bath against the black of the tiles and ceiling makes a bold design statement.

The top part of the walls in this bedroom have also been painted to match the ceiling but this time in a lovely deep blue. This “lowers” the ceiling visually which gives the room a cosier feel. Perfect for a bedroom.

In this bathroom, the green of the ceiling has been taken right down past the halfway mark of the wall. It creates the illusion of space (it is quite hard to see where the ceiling ends). At the same time, the deep green has a wonderful cocooning effect.

Rather than down the wall, we see the ceiling colour come down the door which appears to “shorten” the hallway. The floor picks up the blue with its random stripes and also balances the “weight” of the ceiling. There is a lot happening in this space but all of the elements work together well.

The dusty pink ceiling creates a softness and sense of tranquility in this bedroom especially paired with the soft grey tones of the drapes and light wood flooring.

Another pink ceiling but this time in a peachy pastel tone - just perfect for a nursery!

This is a really strong look but gosh it’s nice (it is the show apartment “The Home” by Ferm Living). I just love grey with terracotta and the navy of the couch adds to the colour scheme. The blending of the light fitting with the ceiling is a great visual effect and stops the light dominating the room. The ceiling is the definite “hero” of this space.

“Wow” pretty much sums this room up to me! Too much blue? Maybe….but it does look great against the cold and brown tones.

Ceilings aren’t just limited to paint. Wallpaper can look amazing not just on walls but ceilings too (as seen in this room designed by Greg Natale).

You can also consider tiles for your ceiling and let’s not forget pressed metal (a definite favourite of mine). There are just as many options for ceilings as there are for walls - as you can see from the above you really are limited only by your imagination!
